How to teach Context Clues
Using What Does This Word Mean Activity, students read independently or with a partner to collect unknown words and phrases to build their vocabulary and reading comprehension.
While reading an informational text, your students will encounter many words that they don’t know. This activity guides them through the steps to take when figuring out definitions of unknown words.
Students will use the anchor chart context clues tips as they read “The Beautiful Moon” to determine the meaning of words and phrases. To continue practicing, students will use the graphic organizer as they read any text.

Introduce this activity by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Context Clues Song. Next, write some made up words on the board in a sentence like “George ate a frigs and french fries.” Students try to figure out what the unknown word means. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students read and look for new words that they didn’t know before.
