How to teach Measurement
In this 2.MD.5 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students will add and subtract within 1000 to solve measurement word problems using different strategies.
Measuring is a real life skill that your students need to be able to do. This lesson can be used in multiple situations- math centers, independent practice, partners or whole group lesson.
Read each measurement word problems using in your Measurement Math Journal. Then, solve by using any strategy you’d like (base ten blocks, number line, cubes, etc). Finally, write the equation that matches the given problem. Challenge yourself by using the extra pages to create your own math word problems.

Use this Estimating Measurement Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
First, read each problem allowed for students. Then, ask students to explain to their partner or the whole group about what is happening in the problem. Next, students should solve the given word problem in a set amount of time. Finally, have students share out their strategies. Make sure to include a variety of strategies in the share out!
