How to teach Verb Tense
Using L.3.1 Third Grade Common Core Lesson, students sort examples into Past, Present, and Future categories in order to demonstrate a command of standard English grammar.
This lesson teaches students how to conjugate verbs correctly into past, present, and future tenses. This lesson is perfect for small group, literacy centers or independent practice.
Sort examples into Past, Present, and Future categories. Then, students will then practice changing verbs from each tense by writing the other parts of
tense on the Verb Strips. Finally, students will continue their practice using the provided worksheets.

Introduce this lesson by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Verb Song. Next, students give examples of verbs in the past, present, and future tenses. Then, distribute materials for students to practice matching verb tenses. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to student discussions’ about verb tense. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote tense skills. Finally, students can continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
