How to teach Punctuation
Using L.4.2 Fourth Grade Common Core Lesson, students correctly use quotation marks in their writing to share their character’s thoughts and feelings effectively.
This lesson teaches students how to use quotation marks to include dialogue in their writing. This lesson is perfect for small group, literacy centers or independent practice.
Create sentences using the Word, Quotation, and Comma Cards. Then,
match the sentences you create to the Character Cards. Finally, students will continue their practice using the provided worksheets.

Introduce this lesson by writing a paragraph with dialogue but without any punctuation. Next, ask students help you read the paragraph. Ask if it was easy to read. Students share advice about how to make this easier to read and to show that a character was speaking. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
