How to teach Synonyms
Using this L.5.5 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, students determine the meaning of words by matching synonym and antonyms cards. Being able to figure out the meaning of words is an important skill for your students. Your students will build their vocabulary through using this lesson. Determine the meaning of each Salsa Word by pairing it with its synonym and antonym. Shuffle the yellow synonym peppers and red antonym peppers. Deal them out to four players. On the Pepper Pass Game Mat place 6 Salsa Words. Each player takes turns placing a synonym or antonym on the Salsa Word, starting with Player 1. If a player does not have a synonym or antonym, they must pass their turn. When a Salsa Word is matched up with a synonym and antonym, remove it from the board and place a new word down. The player who gets rid of all of their peppers is the winner. Students continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
