How to teach Speaking and Listening
Using this Let’s Talk About It Activity, studentsengage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Being able to engage in a discussion is a life skill for our students. This activity will give your students the sentence starters to engage in a discussion easily.
Use the sentence starters to ask questions to check for understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others.

If you are using this activity, your students are probably learning about describing people, places, and things while speaking.
Use this After Reading Discussion Cards Activity as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this activity by students sharing polite ways to engage in a conversation with someone. Next, students review the Small Group Discussion Worksheet. Students act out examples of appropriate and inappropriate ways to participate in a group. Then, give students a topic to talk about. Students engage in a discussion with their classmates. Finally, students review the Small Group checklist and self-evaluate their participation in the discussion. Once finished, students share highs and lows of the discussion.
