How to teach Suffixes and Prefixes
Using Root Words and Endings Activity, students match root words to word endings to create new words.
If your students know root words, they will be able to read many other words. This activity teaches students how to create new words using base words and suffixes.
Match the Ping Pong Paddle (Root Word) to the Ping Pong Ball (Word Endings). Then, complete the Activity Worksheet to show understanding of root words and inflectional forms.

Introduce this activity by writing the suffix ing on the board. Next, ask students to give you examples of words that have this suffix. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, challenge students to come up with their own words with suffixes.
