How to teach Fractions
Using this 1.G.3 First Grade Common Core Lesson, students cut shapes into small parts and then describe them as halves, fourths, or quarters.
This activity will give students a first look at fractions. They will split shapes into equal parts and then label the given fraction as halves, thirds, or quarters.
Cut the shapes into smaller parts. Describe the parts using the words halves, fourths, and quarters. Then, try putting the shapes back together.

Next, students share what they know about the pictures shown.Continue the discussion by describing the shapes after students cut the circles and squares into equal parts. Be sure to use the words halves and fourths! Then, students work independently or with a small group to shade shapes to show halves and fourths. Finally, students continue their practice using the provided worksheets. Once finished, students find examples of halves and quarters at home or in the classroom.
