How to teach Synonyms
Using this Synonym Search Activity, students go on an egg hunt to find pairs of synonyms!
Learning synonyms helps students build their vocabulary to help them comprehend when they reading and improve their writing skills. This activity will help them build their critical thinking skills as they think of the synonym that matches the clue given.
Cut the eggs in half on the black line and scatter around the room. Students receive a basket with five empty eggs. The goal is to search around the room for 5 pairs of synonyms to collect in your basket. When you’ve completed five eggs,write them down on the recording sheet.

Use these Synonym Word Search Worksheets as an additional resource to support your students.
Introduce this activity by playing “I’m Thinking of an Synonym”. Write 10-12 examples of synonyms on the board. Next, give clues to your students. Clues could be “I’m not thinking of the Synonym for Out”. Students then erase words that match your clues. The synonym that is left at the end is should be the synonyms that you are looking for. Then, students complete the worksheet individually or with a partner. Challenge students to write their own sentences using the matches that they made on this worksheet.
