Using this K.OA.3 Kindergarten Common Core Lesson, students match equations to ten frames to build an understanding of number sense.
Realizing how numbers work together is important for your students to know. Too many times, our students memorize answers and don’t truly comprehend why 2 + 3 = 5. This lesson will help with understanding how todecompose numbers equal to 10.
Match the 10 frame to the matching equation card. Use the activity worksheet and record each decomposition by drawing the equation.

Introduce this lesson by using a ten frame mat to show 15. Next, have students share observations about the ten frames. Push them to recognize that 15 is 1 full mat of 10 plus 5 more. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice with the provided worksheets.
