Before beginning this lesson, be sure that you have all of the objects that students need to measure! Before students begin measuring, review with students about good measurement practices (making sure the cubes are touching each other, starting at the beginning of the object and counting the cubes at the end of the object, etc). Then, distribute activity cards to students to begin measuring. As student measure, monitor and give adjusting feedback to make sure that measurements are correct. After students finish measuring, conduct a discussion about ordering objects using the words “shorter” or “longer” than. Finally, students can work independently or in small groups to order objects from shortest to longest.
