How to teach Inequalities
In this 1.NBT.3 First Grade Common Core Lesson, students will compare numbers using symbols (<,>, or =) and words like greater than, less than, or equal to.
In this lesson, students will decide if given numbers are greater than or less than 50. Before the lesson, set up your lesson area with both word and symbol comparison cards.
Flip over the top card on the pile and decide if the card is greater than or less than 50. Put the card in the category that it fits best in. Continue your practice of comparing numbers by writing the comparison symbols(<,>, or =) in the blank on the worksheets.

Use this St. Patrick’s Day Inequalities Activity as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce the comparison symbols (<,>, or =). After introducing the symbols, have students decide if the numbers are greater than or lesson than 50. Place the number in best category. After all of the numbers have been sorted, students work independently or with a small group to fill in the blanks on the worksheet with the comparison symbol(<,>, or =) that best fits.
