How to teach Inequalities
In this 2.NBT.4 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students compare two three-digit numbers based on place value using >, =, and < symbols.
Your students will need to know the symbols used to compare numbers. They will be engaged and learning as they play this fun activity. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
Cut out the number cards for students to compare numbers by playing War! The player that puts down the largest number wins! If the numbers are EQUAL, it’s WAR! Students can record their wins on the activity sheet for assessment.

You may introduce this lesson by reviewing the different comparison symbols and strategies to compare numbers. Then, pass out number cards for students compare numbers by playing War! By playing War, students will compare the numbers that they play and the winner collects the set of cards. As students play, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about comparing numbers. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote comparison skills.
