How to teach Telling Time
In this 3.MD.1 Third Grade Common Core Lesson, students tell and write time to the nearest minute to solve word problems involving time intervals on a number line.
This lesson teaches students how to solve scenarios involving time intervals on a number line. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, match the analog clocks to the correct digital clocks. Then, match the word problem cards to the correct time and time line cards. Continue your practice of solving time interval problems using the provided worksheet with a partner or individually.

You may introduce this lesson by reviewing telling time on a clock to the nearest five minute. Next, distribute analog and digital clock cards for students to practice telling time to the nearest minute.Then, pass out the word problem cards for students to solve time interval word problems. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about telling time. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote time telling skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
