How to teach Rounding

In this 3.NBT.1 Common Core Activity, students use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

This lesson teaches students how to round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.

Students match the ice cream to the cone by rounding according to the directions (to nearest 10 or 100). Then, continue practicing rounding with the provided worksheet individually or with a partner.

You may introduce this lesson by  asking questions like "Which ten is this number closer to?"  about specific points on a displayed number line.   Then, distribute ice cream and cone rounding cards for students to practice rounding. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about rounding. After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to promote rounding skills. Finally, students can continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
