How to teach Adding and Subtracting
In this 4.NBT.4 Fourth Grade Common Core Lesson, students add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers.
Adding and Subtracting is a fundamental skill for our students to be able to do. They need lots of practice to become efficient. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, add or subtract the two numbers on the card. Next, find the answer on the popcorn card and match it to the movie card. Then, write the answer on the recording sheet. Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.

Use this Adding to One Thousand Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
First, review steps on how to add and subtract smaller numbers. With students, create a list of things to remember when adding and subtracting. Ideas on the list could be regroup when necessary, borrow from the neighboring place value, check to make sure if you are adding and subtracting, etc. Next, distribute materials to students. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to student discussions. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote adding and subtracting skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
