How to teach Adding Fractions
In this 3.NF.2 Common Core Activity, students add fractions and mixed numbers with common denominators.
This lesson teaches students how to create add fractions and mixed numbers with common denominators. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
In Level 1, choose four cards to solve. Then, find two fractions that add together to make the sum on the card. Next, record each card on your recording sheet. Once you have completed Level 1, move onto Level 2 by adding Mixed Numbers. Finally, continue practicing with the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.

Introduce this lesson by using fraction models to showing adding fractions. Ask students what they notice about adding fractions. First, model how to add fractions with common denominators fractions. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote adding fractions. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
