How to teach Shape Attributes
In this 5.G.3 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, students understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
Students need to know how to categorize shapes based on different attributes. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, match the shape description to the shape it best describes. Next, find the picture of the shape. Then, record your answers on the provided worksheet. Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets independently or with a partner.

First, introduce this activity by reviewing key vocabulary related to shapes. Example of vocabulary to include are sides, angles, parallel, adjacent, etc. Next, distribute materials to students. Then, students work independently or with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom and listen to discussions students have about categorizing shapes. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote categorizing shape skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
