How to teach Shapes
In this 5.G.4 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, students classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
Students need to know how to categorize shapes based on different attributes. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, with your team you think of shapes that fit in the provided category. After your turn is over, give the hot potato to the other team. Play for three rounds. Then, create a shape hierarchy using the picture cards and arrows. Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets independently or with a partner.

In this lesson, students are going to play Hot Potato to review shapes. First, introduce this game by reviewing key vocabulary related to shapes. Example of vocabulary to include are sides, angles, parallel, adjacent, etc. Next, split students into two teams and review the rules of the game. As students play, circulate around the classroom and listen to discussions students have about categorizing shapes. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote categorizing shape skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
