How to teach Multiplication
Using this On the Water Way with Arrays Activity, students match multiplication equations to the picture or array representation.
Equal Groups introduces your students to multiplication and division. Your students need to learn what it means when they are asked to multiply and divide. This activity gives students the opportunity to match equations to pictures and arrays.
Read the multiplication sentence practicing the communtative property and match the array card to the sentence. Then, challenge students to write addition sentences to show the same array.

Introduce this activity by asking students to create 3 x 4 using counters or tiles. Next, students share their strategies for grouping. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Afterward, students write their multiplication facts. Finally, student draw pictures and write multiplication or division equations. Once finished, students create a bulletin board of multiplication facts for reference.
