Using this K.NBT.1 Kindergarten Common Core Lesson, students build numbers 11-19 using ten frame mats in order to build number awareness.
Understanding what the values of numbers are will help your students break numbers apart to add and subtract mentally. This lesson gives your students practice with decomposing numbers 11-19.
Students place ten frame mats on the table. Pull a number card. Using the monkey counters, fill in the ten frames to make the number. Print multiple copies of ten frame mat and monkey counters. Use the practice worksheet to record answers.

Introduce this lesson by using a ten frame mat to show 15. Next, have students share observations about the ten frames. Push them to recognize that 15 is 1 full mat of 10 plus 5 more. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice with the provided worksheets.
