How to teach Properties
In this 3.OA.5 Third Grade Common Core Lesson, students apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.
This lesson students teaches students the properties of multiplication and division. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, match the Property cards to its definition. Then, match the example card to the property and definition cards. Finally, continue your practice using the provided worksheet.

Use this Commutative and Associative Properties Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
You may introduce this lesson by reviewing addition and subtraction properties. First, make the connection between the addition/subtraction properties to multiplication/division properties. Next, pass out materials to students. Then, students work independently or with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom and listen to student discussions. Once finished, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote property skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
