Number lines can help your students in a variety of ways. In this 1.NBT.6 First Grade Common Core lesson, students practice subtracting 10 from a given number using a number line.
First, find the number you are subtracting 10 from on the number line. Then, use your pencil and show one hop backwards. Finally, write the number where your last hop was on the line provide. Continue practicing subtracting 10 from the given number with the worksheets provided.

To introduce this lesson, you may review using the Have Fun Teaching Counting by 10 Song. Before beginning the lesson, activate students knowledge about subtracting on a number line by asking questions like “What do you know about subtracting?” and having an activity card available to get their ideas flowing! Then, have students work independently or with partners to show subtracting by 10 on their number lines. As they work, be sure to monitor and give adjusting feedback (make sure they are subtracting!). Finally, students can continue their practice using the worksheets provided.
