How to teach Equations
In this 1.OA.7 First Grade Common Core Lesson, students will decide given equations are true or false to understand the meaning of the equal sign.
Many of our students think that the equal sign means “answer”. In this lesson, students will learn the true meaning of an equation.
First, read each equation on the popcorn cards. Then, decide if the card shows a balanced equation. Place the equations under the popcorn box that it best fits. Continue practicing deciding if equations are balanced using the worksheets individually or with a partner.

Begin this lesson by showing two sets of objects that have the same amount. Facilitate a discussion about if the objects show the same amount and ask “How can we show these groups are the same?”. Accept 2-3 answers and then provide the equal sign as a way to show groups are the same. Then, show two sets of objects that have a different amount. Ask “Can we use an equal sign with this set of objects?”. Then, distribute activity cards to students. Ask students to decide if the equations are true or false. Students will continue their practice with the given worksheets individually or with a partner.
