Using Upwords Capitalizing Words Activity, students practice capitalizing days of the week, months of year, and names
Being able to know what letters to capitalize will help your student show case their best writing without errors. This activity gives your students practice with knowing which words need to be capitalized.
Cut out and laminate the letter tiles or use letter tiles from the classroom. A blank game board is provided to customize words. Players select one game board to play on. Place letter tiles in a bag and shake them up. Each player selects 4 capital letters to play with. The object of the game is to capitalize the words on the game board that should begin with capital letters. Not all words will have to be capitalized, so be careful! Players take turns placing their letter tiles on the first letter of a word that should be capitalized. Players may forfeit their turn to pick new letters from the bag. The first player to get rid of all of their letters is the winner.
If you are using this activity, your students are probably learning about capitalization.
Use this Capitalization Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this activity by students giving examples of words that need to be capitalized. Next, help your students come up with a rule about using capital letters. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Finally, ask students to add to their list of words that have capital letters. Once finished, challenge students to create sentences with capital letters.
