Being able determine the main idea of a text helps your students build their reading comprehension. This activity will help your students recognize details that match the main idea.
Students read a book independently or with a partner. Then, students respond to the questions on the card.

Use this Main Idea Hand Graphic Organizer as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this activity by reading a short book. Next, ask students what the book was about and how they know. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner as they read. Once finished, have students share out the main idea of their text. Finally, challenge students to share the main idea of the book by completing the sentence starter “This book is about..” using only 5 words!
