Read any book of your choice aloud to students using the graphic organizer as a guide for finding the main idea and supporting details of the book.

Graphic organizer can be recreated on chart paper for larger viewing ability.

Introduce this activity by reading a short book. Next, ask students what the book was about and how they know. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner as they read. Once finished, have students share out the main idea of their text. Finally, challenge students to share the main idea of the book by completing the sentence starter “This book is about..” using only 5 words!
