How to teach Main Idea

Using Listen for the Main Idea Activity,students determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

Being able determine the main idea of a text helps your students build their reading comprehension. This activity will help your students organize their thoughts to find the main topic as they read.

Read any book of your choice aloud to students using the graphic organizer as a guide for finding the main idea and supporting details of the book.

Graphic organizer can be recreated on chart paper for larger viewing ability.

Use this Main Idea and Details Activity as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce this activity by reading a short book. Next, ask students what the book was about and how they know. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner as they read. Once finished, have students share out the main idea of their text. Finally, challenge students to share the main idea of the book by completing the sentence starter “This book is about..” using only 5 words!
