How to teach Text Features
Using RI.2.5 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students explain how text features support their acquisition of knowledge while reading.
Being aware of text features is an important step for your students. This lesson will teach them about the most prominent text features that they will find in their books.
Studentsmatch the text features to their definitions. Then, students will use the Text Features Scavenger Hunt book to cut and paste examples of text features in non-fiction work. Finally, students describe how the text feature supports their reading.

Use this Book Parts Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this lesson by showing your students different text features in a book. Ask students how that text feature helps them as they are reading. Record their answers on an anchor chart for student reference. Then, give students materials to practice matching text features to their function. Finally, students look for text features in their books and add them to their Text Feature Book.
