How to teach Author's Purpose

Using RI.5.8 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, students explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which point(s).

Understanding the reason why an author wrote an informational text supports your students' comprehension as they read. This lesson gives them the opportunity to find text supports to match the author's points in  a text.

Introduce this activity by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Author's Purpose Song. Create an anchor chart with your students with the different reasons why authors write for them to use during their work time. Then, students complete activity individually or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice using the provided worksheet.
