Description
How to teach Characters
Using Characters Sketch Activity, students describe in depth a character,
setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text.
Your students will read about many different characters in the books that they are reading. These characters will teach your students lessons as well as become their good friends. This activity will help your students look for details in the text to learn more about characters as they read.
Students will read “Welcome to the Neighborhood” and look for details to learn more about one of the characters in the story. Then, students can use the graphic organizer to organize these details.

Introduce this activity by showing students a picture of a character in a book that you recently read. Next, students share what they know about that character. Encourage students to share how they know (the text, a picture, etc). Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students share about what they have read. After reading, students can use this graphic organizer as they read other texts to learn more about characters.
