How to teach Theme
Using Identifying Theme Activity, students determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text in order to apply to their own life.
Theme is the central message of a story. The theme will help you understand the lesson the author wants you to learn from reading their writing. This activity will help your students to determine the theme while using a graphic organizer.
Choose a poem, a play, or a story. Fill in at least two of the cloud cards. Choose the ones that seem most fitting for the piece you read. They will help you determine the themes. Blank cards have been provided for you to make your own questions, too.

Use this How are They the Same Compare and Contrast Story Elements Activity as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this activity by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Story Elements Song. Next, students share examples of lessons that they have learned from other books that they have read. Write their ideas on an anchor chart so your students can reference during the lesson. Then, students read independently or with a partner using the graphic organizer. Finally, students share what they have read about. Once finished, students use the graphic organizer to find the theme of other books. This graphic organizer can be very helpful to use in a reading center or guided reading group to teach theme.
