How to teach Author’s Purpose
Using Why Was it Written? Author’s Purpose Activity, students identify why the author wrote a text in order to answer, explain, or describe.
Understanding the reason why an author wrote a text supports your students’ comprehension as they read. This activity gives them the opportunity to learn more about why an author writes.

Introduce this activity by listening to the Have Fun Teaching Author’s Purpose Song. Next, students share what they know about author’s purpose. Then, students complete the activity individually or with a partner. Finally, students share about the authors and illustrators they learned about. Once finished, students continue their practice using the provided worksheet.
