How to teach Classification

Using this Classifying Worksheet - List, students add examples to four different categories based on the description.

Being able to classify objects helps students to find groupings within objects. It helps their brain organize objects.

Students look at the descriptions. Next, ask yourself "What is an object that matches all of the descriptors?". Then, think about object fits in that category.  Finally, write objects into categories.

Introduce this worksheet by creating a list of ideas of how objects can be sorted. Ask students to share out ideas for different groupings.  Next, give students clues about different objects you are thinking about. Be sure to make the clue vague so multiple objects could fit. For example, "A large, gray mammal". Then, students complete worksheet independently or with a partner. Finally, have students explain why they sorted the terms in that specific way.  Once students are finished, challenge students to add more objects to each category.
