Common Core Activity – L.K.5

How to teach Sorting

Using this Common Core Activity - L.K.5, students place picture objects in the most appropriate category based on where it fits best.

This activity is perfect for teaching students about placing objects in the correct category. It is a great resource for an immediate literacy center or small group activity.

Students sort common objects into categories by placing the object cards into the correct category bowl. Then, students can add to categories using objects of their choosing.

If you are using this activity, your students are probably learning about categories and classifying.

Use this Classifying Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce this activity by creating a category called "Red". Ask students to find objects around the classroom that fit in that category. Push students to explain why they chose that object to go in that category.  Next, distribute materials to students to practice sorting. Finally, challenge students to add new objects to the activity's categories.
