Description
How to teach Force
Using Motion Activity, students sort picture cards into categories of push, pull, or both to build their understanding of force.
Understanding about push and pull forces will help your students as they are brainstorming strategies to fix problems that they face. This activity allows your students to determine which force is being shown.
Use one of two graphic organizers: 1- Sorting Push and Pull or 2- Push and Pull Venn diagram. Then, identify whether the object in the picture can be pushed, pulled, or sometimes both. After sorting the pictures, think of an object that can be pushed and an object that can be pulled. Then, draw a picture and fill-in the sentence on the worksheet.

Introduce this activity by asking students what they know about force. Next, record ideas on an anchor chart. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Finally, revisit the anchor chart to add or delete ideas that they once had about force. Challenge students to come up with examples of each force to show their full knowledge from the unit.
