How to teach Vocabulary
Using L.2.3 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
This lesson teaches students how to change their sentence structure or vocabulary depending on their audience. This lesson is perfect for small group, literacy centers or independent practice.
Students will sort words and phrases into formal and informal categories. Then, students will decide how the words were sorted in to the different categories. Finally, students will continue their practice of capitalization using the activity sheet.

Introduce this lesson by asking students to give examples of how they would say hi to different people (the principal, their friends, a baby, etc). Next, engage in a discussion about why people change the way they speak depending on who they talk to. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
