How to teach Bill of Rights

Using this Our Freedoms Worksheet, students match the picture with the word that describes the freedom to learn the rights of every United States citizen.

The United States is a free country. That means that people are allowed to live and believe as they wish. Having freedom is a privilege and should never be taken for granted. US citizens have a responsibility to respect one another’s choices and protect the freedoms that our soldiers so bravely fight for.

 Look at the pictures below. Each one shows a freedom we have in this country. Match the picture with the word that describes the freedom.

Introduce this worksheet by beginning a discussion about a person's rights. Create an anchor chart with a T-chart with Rights and Responsibilities as the titles. Explain that rights are things that they are entitled to or deserve. With their help, fill in the t-chart with examples of rights that they have as students (free education, fair treatment, etc). Then, students complete worksheet independently or with a partner.  Finally, students share what they learned about United States freedoms.
