How to teach Shape Properties
Using this Battle Shape Battleship Activity, students classify two-dimensional figures by their properties by playing a game of Battle Shape (a geometrical rendition of Battleship).
Your students interact with shapes almost every day. They need to know different shapes and their properties to be able to describe the objects they are looking for. This activity will help your students know the properties of common 2D shapes.
Sort the shape cards onto the shape properties sorting mats. Then, with a partner or small group, play Battle Shape! Sink and collect your opponent’s Shape Ships by first choosing a coordinate. If a Shape Ship is on that coordinate, your opponent will show you the Shape Ship and you must correctly name a property of that shape. Correct answers mean you keep the Shape Ship. If incorrect, the Shape Ship is returned to the water. Fold your game board on the dotted line, place your Shape Ships on your board, and begin! At the end of the game, match the shape property cards to their correct shape and complete the recording sheet.

Next, go over the different properties of a shape such as parallel and perpendicular lines, and the different angles. Then, students complete the activity with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about 2-D shapes and their properties.
