How to teach Main Idea
Using this What’s the Main Idea Activity, students recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea to build their comprehension skills.
Being able determine the main idea of a text helps your students build their reading comprehension. This activity will help your students organize their thoughts to find the main topic as they read.
Students read “The Poison Dart Frog” and use the graphic organizer to record the key details to support the main idea of the text. Then, use the main idea to write a summary of the text.

Introduce this activity by reading the provided passage. Next, ask students what the passage was about and how they know. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner as they read. Once finished, have students share out the main idea of the text. Finally, challenge students to share the main idea of the text by completing the sentence starter “This passage is about..” using only 5 words!
After completing this activity, challenge students to choose a book on their reading level and discuss with a partner the main idea.
