How to teach Two Step Word Problems
In this 3.OA.8 Third Grade Common Core Lesson, students solve two-step word problems using the four operations and checking for reasonableness of answer using mental math and estimation.
Two Step Problems are extremely tricky for our students. They need lots of practice and structure when solving. This lesson teaches students how to solve two-step word problems.
First, read the given problem and match the “Restate” card to the word problem. Then, match the square word problem cards to the correct equation. Finally, solve the problems on the activity sheet. Continue your practice using the provided worksheet individually or with a partner.

You may introduce this lesson by reviewing different strategies that could be used to solve a word problem. Next, distribute word problem and restate cards to students. Once you see student mastery in this first step of solving word problem, distribute word problem and equation cards. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote fluency skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
