Taking Care of the Poor Worksheet

This Taking Care of the Poor Worksheet is a great way for students to learn about who should care for the poor and those in need? There are certain social responsibilities that are the duty of the government, family, church, or individual. Who should care for the poor and those in need?

Studies have been done that have revealed that if the government increases their budget to help the poor by 30%, the result is that 30% fewer people will attend church. When government takes care of the poor, it makes the poor comfortable in their poverty. Poverty should be a temporary thing, not a lifestyle. Individuals, charities, and churches should help people by giving them the tools they need to change.

Benjamin Franklin said, “I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.” In fact, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both belonged to the Vestry Board, which would go out and identify the needs of the people in the community and take care of those needs. It was never the responsibility of the government to do these things.

Historical data shows that a typical charity that helps those in need should give 60% or more of their proceeds to those in need, with 40% or less going towards company expenses. If less than 60% of the donations go towards those in need, it’s probably not a good charity to give to. The government, on the other hand, has historically given 30% or less to those in need.

So, who should really be taking care of the poor? In the Bible, there are 205 verses that talk about the poor. Only 1 of the verses mentions the government’s role. The only thing the government is told to do for the poor is to make sure they are taken care of if they come into court. It is not the government’s responsibility to take care of the poor, it is the responsibility of the individual, charities, and churches.
