How to teach Decoding Words
Using this Read It Decoding Words Activity, students decode provided words by using the provided tips on the “What should I do when I don’t know a word?” poster.
When you begin to read, you need to know how to read words and sentences with accuracy. This activity gives students the opportunity to practice how to read words that may be difficult by using decoding strategies.
First, students read the provided words using the provided strategies. Then, they write the words they don’t know in the graphic organizer for future practice. Finally, the students keep track of their progress with the provided graph.

Introduce this activity by asking students to share examples of multisyllabic words. Next, ask students what to do when they read a word that they don’t know.
