How to teach Spoken and Written Language

Using the Spoken or Written Language Activity, students determine which words or phrases are most appropriate to be used in spoken or written situations.

Being able to speak in front of a group of people takes a lot of practice. Some words and phrases are better spoken, while others are better written. This worksheet will give your students understanding what situations to say specific words or phrases.

Students sort words and phrases into spoken and written categories. Then, students explain how they sorted the phrases.

Use this Let’s Talk Classroom Speaking Activity as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce this activity by students sharing words or phrases they would say to their friends vs. their teacher. Next, students discuss why we don’t say the same to both groups. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students create skits using phrases from the worksheet to demonstrate when to best use them. Once finished, students write their own sentences using the phrases from the activity.
