How to teach Multiplication
In this 3.NBT.3 Third Grade Common Core Lesson, studentsmultiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
This lesson teaches students how to multiply one digit by multiples of 10. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, shuffle and sort cards into piles according to the color of the card. Then, flip over the card and using base 10 blocks for support multiply the two numbers together and record on the recording sheet. Finally, continue your practice by completing the provided worksheet.

You may introduce this lesson byreviewing what it means to multiply. Next, number cards for students to practice multiplying by multiples of 10. Then, students work independently or with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about multiplication. If you notice students struggling, provide sticks of 10 for support. Once finished, share students discussions that you heard to promote multiplication skills. Finally, students can continue their practice using the provided worksheets.
