How to Teach About the People in Your Community
This Local People Worksheet helps second graders learn that a community is made of real people who help one another every day. Children often notice the firefighter, the baker, the mail carrier or the librarian, but they rarely stop to think about how each person’s work makes the whole neighborhood a better place to live. Talking with those people turns a social studies idea into something a child can see, hear and write about.
About This Worksheet
In this local people worksheet, students talk to a helper who lives or works in their own neighborhood, then write about that person. First, they write the person’s name. Next, they write what this person’s job is and how this person helps the community. Last, they write why they are thankful for this person. Because every child talks to a different helper, every response is the child’s own, and the page works well as a take-home interview or a family project. The heading, “Who Are The People in Your Neighborhood?”, invites children to look around and notice the helpers they pass every day.
