Multiplication becomes real for students the moment it leaves the fact table and shows up in a story, and this multiplication word problem worksheet is built for exactly that moment. Third graders learn to read a situation, notice the equal groups hiding inside it, and decide which two numbers belong in the number sentence. That is the heart of the third grade standard for multiplication and division within 100: interpreting products as the total of a certain number of equal groups.
Each problem on this page describes something a child already understands. Stickers fill the pages of an album, muffins are packed into boxes for a bake sale, pepper plants grow in rows in the school garden, and folding chairs are set out at picnic tables. Use this multiplication word problem worksheet as a warm up during your multiplication unit, as a small group task while you meet with readers, or as homework that families can talk through at the kitchen table. Ask students to circle the number of groups in one color and the number in each group in another color before they write anything. Have partners trade papers and explain their work box to each other, because saying the reasoning out loud is where the understanding sticks. If you need an easier entry point, cover the last problem and work the first three together. For a challenge, ask students to write a fifth story problem of their own that uses one of the facts on the page.
