From our teachers' playbook

Whole numbers plus a little extra

What do kids learn about mixed numbers?

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction together, like 2 ¾: two whole pizzas plus three-quarters of another. Students first learn to switch between mixed numbers and improper fractions (2 ¾ = 11/4) by picturing how many fourths fit in two wholes. Then they add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators in 4th grade, and with unlike denominators and multiplication in 5th grade. The click moment comes when kids see that 7/4 and 1 ¾ are the exact same amount, just written two ways.

Our favorite ways to teach mixed numbers

Mixed numbers make sense when kids can see the wholes. These moves start with pictures and end with confident computing.

Draw the wholes

Before any rules, have kids draw circles to show 11/4. They shade fourths until they run out and count the full circles. After a few of these, they invent the "divide and see what's left" shortcut themselves.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

Think aloud the regroup

Model subtracting 3 ¼ minus 1 ¾ out loud. "I can't take three-fourths from one-fourth, so I'll trade one whole for four-fourths." Naming the trade connects it to regrouping with whole numbers, which kids already know.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Mix the problem types

Once kids can add and subtract, mix in converting, comparing and word problems on the same page. Mixed practice makes kids decide what each problem needs, which is exactly what tests ask them to do.

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a fraction, like 3 ½. It means three wholes and one half more. It's another way to write an improper fraction, in this case 7/2.

What grade learns mixed numbers?

Students usually meet mixed numbers in 4th grade, where they add and subtract them with like denominators. In 5th grade they work with unlike denominators and multiply fractions by mixed numbers.

How do you change an improper fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The answer is the whole number and the remainder becomes the new numerator. For 11/4, 11 divided by 4 is 2 with 3 left over, so it's 2 ¾.

How do you subtract mixed numbers when the fraction is too small?

Trade one whole for an equal fraction. In 4 ¼ minus 1 ¾, change 4 ¼ into 3 5/4. Now subtract: 3 5/4 minus 1 3/4 equals 2 2/4, or 2 ½.
