From our teachers' playbook

A pot of gold full of learning!

What can kids learn on St. Patrick's Day?

St. Patrick's Day falls on March 17, and it's the perfect excuse to sprinkle a little green into every subject. Kids read about the holiday's Irish roots and traditions, then dive into themed practice: counting gold coins, skip counting shamrocks, writing a plan to catch a leprechaun, and building compound words like rain + bow = rainbow. The magic is that kids practice real skills while thinking it's all a party. The click moment is when the leprechaun "visits" and leaves a math problem behind.

Our favorite ways to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in class

These moves keep the holiday fun and the learning real.

Count the gold

Fill a little pot with pennies and have kids count them by ones, then group them into tens. "How much gold did the leprechaun leave?" Real coins make counting and money skills hands-on.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Plan the trap

Model a how-to plan on the board: "First, I'll build a ramp. Next, I'll add shiny coins." Then kids write their own leprechaun trap steps. It's a festive way to practice sequence words.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Lucky word flash

Flash holiday word cards like shamrock, rainbow and gold. Kids read them fast and use one in a sentence. A quick round builds vocabulary for writing time.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).
