How to teach Number Patterns
In this 5.OA.2 Fifth Grade Common Core Lesson, studentswrite simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions.
Your students need to know how to use and evaluate parentheses and brackets in numerical expressions. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
First, write an equations using the clues on the Peanut Butter card (brown). Next, match the Peanut Butter Card to the Jelly card. Then, record your expressions on the worksheet. Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets independently or with a partner.

Use this Patterns Activity as an additional resource for your students.
First, introduce this lesson by reviewing key vocabulary related to the four operations. Create an anchor chart for student reference during the lesson. Next, distribute materials to students. Then, student complete activity independently or with a partner. As students work, circulate around the classroom and listen to discussions students have about Order of Operations. Once finished, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote Order of Operations skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
