About this resource
Description
Adding big numbers is easier than it looks once students see that every place value is its own small addition fact. This add millions no regrouping worksheet gives 5th grade students steady practice adding numbers into the tens and hundreds of millions, where each column adds up to nine or less. Because no column needs to be carried, students can focus on lining up the digits and reading large numbers with commas.
About This Worksheet
Students begin with six column addition problems set on a place value grid, with sums as large as 996,873,488. Next, they solve two real-world word problems. One asks them to add airport travelers and decide whether a claim of more than eighty million is correct. The other asks them to find how many gallons of water a town used from its water tower over two months. Students write each answer in a complete sentence.
What’s Included
- Part A: six column addition problems with 8-digit and 9-digit addends and no regrouping
- Part B: two word problems, including one that asks students to check a claim and explain their thinking
- A full answer key on page 2
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it builds confidence with very large numbers before regrouping is added. Second, it reinforces place value, because every digit has to stay in its own column. Third, the word problems show students that big numbers describe real things, like airport crowds and a town’s water supply, and ask them to explain their reasoning.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this add millions no regrouping worksheet as a warm-up before a lesson on carrying, as a homework review, or as a quick check in a math center. Ask students to read each sum aloud to practice naming large numbers. Homeschool families can pair it with a place value chart so children can see why the columns matter.
